AI agent vs chatbot: what's the difference?
A chatbot talks, an AI agent acts. The difference sounds small but determines what you can do with it. When do you choose which for your process?
The difference between an AI agent and a chatbot can be captured in one sentence: a chatbot talks, an agent acts. Both use a language model, but what they do with it differs, and that determines where they're useful.
The chatbot
A chatbot responds to what you type. You ask a question, it gives an answer. Smart, fast, and perfectly fine for customer questions, looking up information or holding a conversation. But if something then needs to happen, booking an appointment, adjusting an order, the chatbot stops at "here's how you do that."
The agent
An AI agent carries on where the chatbot stops. It's given a goal, picks the steps itself and uses tools to carry them out. Not "here's how you make a quote," but "I've prepared the quote, do you want to review it?"
Side by side
| Chatbot | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Mainly does | Answering | Carrying out tasks |
| Works | Question by question | Goal-driven, multiple steps |
| Tools | Limited | Can consult systems and take actions |
| Used for | Customer questions, info | Taking work off your plate, processes |
| Risk | Low | Higher, needs guardrails |
Which do you choose?
Start with the problem, not the technology. Do people mainly need to get answers? A good chatbot is enough. Does work need to be taken off your plate? Then you need an agent. And often the best setup is a combination: a friendly front that talks, with an agent behind it that does.
Where agents already make the difference today, you can read on the pillar page AI agents. And when you're ready to build: how to approach an AI agent.
